11.3 Summary:
Sexual Dysfunction is defined as persistent or recurrent problems with sexual interest, arousal, or response. It is very common, affecting 43% of women and 31% of men in the world today. For each gender the symptoms or problems are different. For example, women sexual dysfunction includes a lack of interest in sex, a lack of sexual pleasure, or the inability to reach an orgasm. As for men, they struggle with things such as performance related anxieties and reaching an orgasm too soon. Sexual dysfunctions can be branches into three different categories such as sexual desire disorders, sexual arousal disorders and orgasmic disorders. Sexual desire disorders involve both the hypo-active sexual desire disorder and sexual aversion disorder. Hypo-active sexual disorder is the absence or lack of sexual interest or desire. This disorder is the most frequently diagnosed with sexual dysfunction. It is also more common for women to experience this disorder than it is for men to experience it. This condition may occur in response to hormone deficiencies, relationship problems, or depression. Sexual aversion disorder involves repulsion or strong aversion to genital sexual contact. This is often referred to as the fear that an individual has with sexual contact. People that have experienced any sexual trauma- something like abuse or rape- will most likely be affected by this disorder. Sexual arousal disorders are things such as male erectile disorder or female sexual arousal disorder. Male erectile disorder is when it is difficult for a male to achieve and or maintain an erection sufficient enough to engage in sexual intercourse. There are several reasons as to why this may happen. This includes either psychological problems and physical problems. Or on some occasions it may be a combination of both. Psychological problems may include self-doubt or performance anxiety. The possible physical problems are usually because of diabetes and neurological problems. Females on the other hand, are likely to get female sexual arousal disorder. This is a condition when women have difficulties in becoming sexually aroused or adequately lubricated. Female sexual arousal disorder can be caused by a handful of things such as health problems, repressive culture, family background, or relationship problems. Orgasmic disorders happen with both men and women. Female orgasmic disorder and male orgasmic disorder refer to the lack of an orgasm or persistent difficulties in achieving an orgasm that usually follow a normal phase of sexual excitement. It is more common for women to experience this than men however, it still happens to men. Treatment techniques for this have been found to help yet it takes the person with this condition to learn massive amounts of knowledge about their individual sexual responsiveness through masturbation. Another orgasmic disorder is premature ejaculation. Premature ejaculation is explained as rapid ejaculation following any type of sexual stimulation. This is the most common type of sexual dysfunction. Three out of the ten men have problems with premature ejaculation. Along with sexual dysfunction come two other topics: performance anxiety and sensate-focus exercises. Performance anxiety is the anxiety that is experienced in performance situations, which includes sexual acts, stemming from a fear of negative evaluation of one's ability to perform. This anxiety plays a major role in many cases of sexual dysfunctions. The majority of men that get this condition feel that if they are not able to perform sexually then that have a negative reflection on their manhood. This also causes an increase in stress and makes men more likely to have this problem. Sensate-focus exercises work as an aid for people that are not able to overcome their own sexual anxieties. It is defined as a technique that is used in sex therapy that consists of non genital massages to lessen the anxiety associated with sexual interactions. It is proven that 70-90% of couples that take part in these exercises will be able to overcome the performance anxiety symptoms.
