|
The mother, is in the late adulthood developmental stage. In the beginning of the movie she is going through empty nest syndrome because her only son moved halfway across the country to go to college. This causes her to feel lonely and empty. Because of those feelings she is constantly calling him making sure he is okay and has everything that he needs. Although he returning home for a short time, she still can't let go of the thought that he is still a child so she treats hims as if he still is one. She is also going through menopause which is demonstrated throughout the movie with hot flashes, forgetfulness and moodiness. Towards the end of the movie, he begins to open up to her about his problems with girls and his lack of success with his job. She is beyond happy to assist him with his problems and give him advice on what he should consider doing. She realizes that even though he is an adult, she can still be apart of his life. Her part is just smaller than when he was a child. She also figures out that in her own life she can take chances with her own relationships.
The son, Andy, is emerging adulthood. In the beginning of the movie his mom calls him several times in one day yet he ignores her calls. When he calls her back he only gives her minimal words. Because he thinks his mother is obsessive and clingy, he distances himself from her as much as possible. It's almost as if he isolates himself away from her. Throughout the movie he tries to help her with her relationship issues rather than figure out his own. He also fails to sell his cleaning product to several companies. This is a cause of why he lacks confidence and is insecure about himself. He is used to being babied by his mother so he tends to act like a child in the beginning of the movie and for part of their trip. Toward the end of the movie, he realizes that his mother was 'over' caring for him because she wants the best for him. This make him start to open up to her about his personal issues. His mother helps his gain confidence with his product which leads him to some success. By this he learns that his mother is wise enough to help him if he ever needs it.
