Menopause is defined as the absence of menstrual periods for 12 months. It is the time in a woman's life when the function of the ovaries ceases. This means that the ovaries no longer ripen egg cells or produce the sex hormones. It is the most dramatic physical change during middle age for women. Menopause occurs when women are around the age of 50. Men do not go through menopause because they do not have ovaries. However with age, their testosterone levels gradually decrease.
